12 Items You Should Never Store in the Bathroom

never store in bathroom

At times, the way you store your things at home may only be out of convenience — to make things simply accessible for you. But it is important to know whether they can be safely stored in that place or not. Aside from the bedroom and the kitchen, the bathroom is one of the most common places at home where you store your essentials. Then again, it may be because it is convenient and accessible, but not really advisable. This is a common mistake that people make, especially when the bathroom space allows for a lot of essentials to be stored.

As you read this article, you may want to consider checking which ones you have been storing the wrong way. So we have listed down the items you should never store in the bathroom.

1. Towels

towels

Bathrooms are humid places, which makes them prone to molds and mildew. That’s why storing your towels in the bathroom is not advisable as they are exposed to those molds and mildew. Instead, you can store them in a linen shelf or cabinet near the bathroom. Make sure to place the linen cabinet strategically where it is most accessible, so you can easily get them before you enter the bathroom.

2. Jewelry

Not all people store their jewelry in the bathroom because space doesn’t always allow for it. But for people who do, now is the time to stop doing that. The humidity inside the bathroom can cause your jewelry to tarnish. All your jewelry pieces should be stored in jewelry boxes, drawers, or dressers where it is cool and dry.

3. Makeup

Makeups aren’t meant to be stored in the bathroom. The temperature fluctuations inside the bathroom can cause the quality of makeup to deteriorate, changing its color and drying it. Storing them inside also risks them from being exposed to molds and other bacteria, which is not good, since you apply them on your face. Find a cool, dry place to store your makeup, such as your bedroom. Set aside a drawer, basket, or an organizer for all your makeup products. See to it as well that they are kept out of direct sunlight.

4. Toothbrush

Your toothbrushes shouldn’t be stored in the bathroom. Yes, you read it right. It may seem convenient to store them in the bathroom because you can quickly get them to brush your teeth, but it is not a good practice as this makes them susceptible to bacteria from the air every time you flush the toilet. Store them in a place where they can properly air dry, such as the counter. You can place them in a toothbrush holder. But if you still choose to store them in the bathroom, you can close the toilet bowl lid before your flush to keep the toothbrushes from being sprayed with toilet plumes. Also, to be safe, avoid storing them near the toilet bowl.

5. Razors

The metal on the razor rusts easily because of humidity, making the razor another item that you shouldn’t store in the bathroom. Storing them in the bathroom will only expose them to germs. Instead, you can store them in an upright, open, and dry place. Rinse the razor thoroughly after you use it, then gently pat dry with a towel or thick washcloth. Keep it out of the reach of children.

6. Magazines

Humidity in the bathroom can cause molds to grow, which is why it is not advisable for you to store your magazines there. Molds like to skulk onto papers, causing stains to them. Take that magazine rack out of the bathroom and find a cool, dry place to store your magazines, such as your living room, bedroom, or your home office.

7. Perfume

Perfumes react to direct sunlight and temperature fluctuations, causing the fragrance to decline over time. So it is best to keep them away from places that are directly touched by sunlight and high humidity areas, such as the bathroom. Choose a cool, dry, dark place to store all your perfumes. You can opt to store your perfume in the refrigerator, but make sure that it is not too cold. Storing them in the refrigerator helps preserve the color and scent of the perfume.

8. Bathrobe

For some, it may have become a habit to hang your bathrobe in the bathroom for easy access. Storing your bathrobe in the bathroom can cause it to smell musty because of the humidity and temperature fluctuations inside. You can store your bathrobes together with your towels in a linen cabinet near the bathroom that’s well-ventilated.

9. Medication

The medicine cabinet in your bathroom is not the best place to store your medications. Storage instructions for medications always indicate that you have to store them in a cool, dry place, all of which the bathroom doesn’t comply with. Improper storage of medications could lessen their efficacy. You can store them in the kitchen cabinet, shelf, or in a dresser drawer in the bedroom. When you store them in the kitchen, make sure that they are stored away from the stove, hot appliances, sink, and out of the reach of children and pets.

10. Vitamins and Supplements

Same with your medications, your vitamins and supplements shouldn’t be stored in the medicine cabinet of your bathroom because of humidity and temperature fluctuations. Store them in the kitchen instead, as they should also be taken with food. But if temperature and humidity levels are high in your kitchen, then you can store your vitamins and supplements in the dining room. Direct sunlight is not good for them, so see to it that you don’t store them in shelves or cabinets that are near the window.

11. Makeup Brushes and Sponges

With the bathroom being a possible breeding ground for bacteria, it is not a safe place to store makeup brushes and sponges. Temperature fluctuations and humidity inside the bathroom cause bacteria and molds to multiply and easily creep into your makeup brushes and sponges. That’s why the bedroom is a safer place to store them. You can store them in the dresser drawer or in a makeup brush and sponge holder with a lid, so they are also kept away from dust.

12. Electronic Equipment

The bathroom is a dangerous place for your electronic devices, such portable hair dryers, heaters, radios, etc. Moisture in the bathroom causes the components of your electronics to rust. Aside from this, accidental water spills on the electronics can cause electric shocks and other electrical hazards. Store your electronic equipment in the bedroom, living room, or in your home office where it is cool and dry. Self-storage units also make good extra storage spaces for your electronics, especially if you are thinking of storing them long-term. A climate-controlled storage unit is advisable for items that are extra sensitive to humidity and temperature fluctuations.
