How to Organize Your Self-Storage Unit

organize storage unit

People who opt to use self-storage mainly have things they want to store, but do not have enough room for storage at home or in the office. Some of those belongings are stored for safe-keeping, some are just stored in case they are needed in the future, and some are just there because we are not sure if we want to throw them away. There may be different reasons why people put their belongings in storage units, but the question is: how do you organize them?

Organizing your self-storage unit doesn’t have to be complicated. It just needs a proper system from the very beginning, so you can keep track of all the things that you stored.

1. List it Out!

If you’re renting a storage unit for your belongings, it’s important that you keep a list or an inventory of the things that you store inside. This will help keep track of all the things you have put up for storage, so you can also easily access them.

2. Use Transparent or Translucent Containers

use transparent or translucent containers

Although the regular moving boxes will be fine to use in storage units, transparent or translucent containers are also an option you should take as it makes it easy for you to see what you’re looking for. It will save you time in trying to open every box just to look into their contents.

3. Label Your Containers

label your containers

Labeling your containers should never be omitted when you organize, most importantly if it is with your storage unit. Keep in mind that there will be times you will not be able to visit your storage unit, and chances are, you will forget where you placed each of them. That’s why it’s important that you label each container accordingly.

4. Consider the Frequency of Access

consider frequency access

Prioritize the ones you’ll access more often. Make sure that you put them in front, on top or where you can easily access them.

5. Stack Your Boxes According to Size and Weight

You might think that as long as you organize everything inside the box, your work is done. Of course, it does not stop there because you still have to stack them up according to size and weight. You have to see to it that the heavy boxes are not placed above a lighter box, nor the big boxes on top of a small box. Stack them up vertically as well, so you can save more space for other containers to be stored in the unit.

6. Make Use of the Storage Space

If possible, disassemble furniture items that can hoard the space in order to make room for more things to store. Remember also that there shouldn’t be any wasted space inside your containers, so you can maximize whatever needs to be stored. With this, you will avoid any misplaced items, and at the same time, you will avoid chances of clutter in your own storage unit.

7. Take Note of the Items You Can’t Store

Storage organization isn’t only about avoiding clutter or making room for storage, but it’s also about maintaining safety as you go along the process. And in doing so, you have to take note of the items you can’t store or if you’re going to store them, you have to know how to store them in such a way that they will not start any hazards in the unit. Wires, bolts, and other flammable objects shouldn’t be stored all together.

Like any other organization tips, it will take time on your part at first, but it will all be at your benefit because you are the one

who will get to use them for a long time. So sparing time even for just a bit more in organizing them wouldn’t hurt if it will lessen the load of looking for certain items or if it will help you maintain a proper storage system.
